All the categories that you see have been written with a beginner in mind. There's a lot of information relating to Joomla! on the net, but the vast majority of it assumes you are at least an intermediate user, OR, has been written by an advanced user, who usually is no longer able to think at that level.

Extensions can be thought of as EXTRAS, functions that can be easily added to Joomla!
Extensions plug into Joomla! easily and quickly from the Administrator Panel.

They can be :
- Components - These are mini-applications such as a shopping cart, a forum, A Search Engine Friendly Links creator.
- Modules - these usually provide a specific function, and have the ability to be placed anywhere around your website
- Mambots - "Bots" - These provide small functions, often in the background. In the Joomla 1.5.x series, the name has been changed to "plugins"
An extension can be any of the above types, or could include one or more of these types in order to carry out its function

As of June 2008, there are 3200 different extensions, and many of them are GPL (Free)
