Front End Tour

Let's have a quick look around the front page of your site. Go to http://www.yoursite.com. Ok, first the default template may not be to your liking and that can be fixed up/changed soon. For now, look at the features and Positions of those Features

If you installed the default Joomla! package (1.0.xx) and you haven't changed the template, you will be looking at rhuk_solarflare... Notice the following:

  • A top menu with just a few links. Handy for the most important things to be right in front of an arriving visitor.
  • A site search box
  • A NewsFlash (not to be confused with "news" or "latest news" - those are different things)
  • A banner (advertisement)
  • A menu system : first the main menu (as against the top menu you've already seen), then the "other" menu with some Joomla! links. You will find later that you can make as many menus as you like.
  • In the middle and lower middle are some news/articles (generally known as "content"). These are regular items you type up which can be presented on the front page by choice, along with the way they look (double column etc)
  • A login form for your registered guests.
  • A poll feature, great to be able to ask your visitors for their opinions and needs.

Now the most important thing here to get a feeling for, is that all these features are in particular positions because on the template (just one file) we can stipulate "positions" in the form of blocks. Then the features we just saw (modules) are "put" in those blocks. There can be more than one in a "block", and where they appear in that block, the order, can be set and changed.

Continue by going to Administrator Tour when you are ready.
