Yes !, You read the title right...
Sounds like blasphemy from a Joomla! site - right?
It's not, it's simply the result of long experience.
When you're starting out with CMS (Content Management Systems), most people chase two things : "Free" and "Bigger is Best"
Let us simply pass on what we've learned the hard way...
The Joomla! Great :
Joomla! is great for a site where you want to have hundreds to thousands of pages of content, where you want to be able to run a membership site, a social interaction site, have special presentation effects for say a magazine site, etc... the list is fairly endless due to the thousands of Open Source extensions the Joomla! community has produced.
The Joomla! Not-SO-Good :
Joomla! is not a small application, it consists of thousands of file in the core release alone. All those files create complexity. Throw in a few extensions and the security risk increases markedly as new Joomla! versions come out and those extensions are not kept up-to-date. At the very least you'll have to update to every new version as soon as possible after release. Failure to do that, or closely track each and every extensions will lay you open to hackers.
Please do not rate the hacker threat as inconsequential. It's real and growing. If you're site is hacked, you may lose all your work, especially if old backups have been overwritten by your host. Worse, hackers may do more than just deface your site, they may compromise it to send spam and then your server host will kill your account quicker than you can blink.
Well, that's just a summary of the worst.
It doesn't mean don't use Joomla! for your project. It means : think about whether you're entering an overkill zone.
If you're wanting to build multi-page review sites/affiliate sites etc., then it's definitely overkill. To use Joomla! would take us much more time, and time means wasted opportunity. Granted, you could customize a Joomla! installation and then clone it ready for new sites, but you've still got the "keep it, and the extensions right up-to-date" problem.
If we're building websites of less than 100 pages with no complex features needed, then we would never use Joomla!... Affiliate/review sites need a solid program that is a little specialized for the project. Crack out 5 to 10 article pages, organize a menu, some sales page/main page layout help, headers and footers ready with all the necessary details...
