A Guide to a Manual Installation of the Joomla! CMS System
N.B. - The following presupposes :
- You are on a Microsoft windows computer
- You have organised a web server host with a standard cpanel control panel. Get either a good hosting account for one Joomla! domain or a budget reseller hosting account for Joomla! sites or a more powerful hosting reseller account
- You wish to install Joomla! into the root www directory of your web server account. This means that after installation, if you type in your domain name, www.yourdomainname.com, you will see your home page. Otherwise you can install into a sub-directory
1/ Download the latest version of Joomla! from www.Joomla.org
2/ Unzip the file onto your desktop, open the folder and select ALL the folders and files inside and zip all these files into one file. Now when you unzip them on your server they will not be contained in another folder as they were in the first zip.
3/ Run your FTP program and upload the zipped file into the directory where you want your Joomla! installation (usually the root www directory, often called "public_html" in a cpanel environment)
4/ Now go to your cpanel control panel (the access details will all have been in your welcome email when you signed up with your host), choose "file manager" and navigate to the directory where you uploaded your file. Tick the line box for the file and select "Extract" at the top. (Some versions of cpanel might have slightly different terminologies).
5/ Now go and create a mysql database in your cpanel control panel and write down the database name, user and password ready for your installation.
6/ Go to your web browser and type in your site address, using the localtion of where you unzipped the files, usually http://www.yoursitename.com and the first installation screen will appear.
7/ Now it's a matter of proceeding through each screen and reading what you are asked to do carefully. I recommend you create the sample data if you are brand-new to Joomla!. Create a difficult password for "admin" when asked and don't lose it.
8/ Now get on to your post installation jobs...
